Empires of the Undergrowth is an upcoming RTS being created by Slug Disco that focuses on building an ant colony and protecting your queen in a harsh underground battleground, full of nasty creepy crawlies.
In the current Empires of the Undergrowth build you must do whatever it takes to protect your queen for the vile beetle larvae that threatens your very existence. However unlike the usual style of RTS games (selecting units alone or in group formation) you simply click on objects under the ground and the ants will do your bidding. Starting with a primary nest that is occupied by your Queen and several gather ants, you must dig pathways that lead to troves of food.
Don’t go rushing in without a game plan though – Empires of the Undergrowth features plenty of enemy units that hide behind the dirt in front of you. Waiting eagerly to launch an attack against you the minute you discover them. It’s up to you to take command of your army and build food storage, and black ant spawning areas to help keep your ant family alive and have the sturdy defense once you encounter this vile creatures of the underground.
As you’ll no doubt have gathered by the multitude of YouTubers playing the game, Empires of the Undergrowth is ready to go into early access on Steam. Outside of some small intermittent issues, this has been the case for a few days now.

The level design and insect designs of Empires of the Undergrowth are simply beautiful. A lot of detail has gone into this game, making you stop in awe as the lighting effects slowly begin to fill your nest. The enemy unit in this Alpha, Beetle larvae, may actually make you jump the first time you encounter one. You never see them coming until a small but piercing cry is made by the larvae itself.
Even in there early stages of development, it’s an impressive game – a creepy crawly RTS where danger can lurk just behind the corner. Be prepared for long fights and be sure to have plenty of food and black ants on hand as you never know how many larvae you’ll find in the Empires of the Undergrowth.

And up next!Hot on the heels of the leafcutter update we will be looking to make an update to freeplay! This update will aim to bring leafcutters into freeplay and with them landmarks containing leaves, new uber creatures and some other new landmarks. Additionally we will be looking at ways of making freeplay harder in the late game with fewer creatures. Of course we will introduce a new map at this point!
Whilst John is looking at that, Matt and Liam will be planning the next formicarium tier.
